Country House Hotel in Devon

Gidleigh Park, a Tudor-style country house hotel in Devon, was built as a private residence in 1928 for Australian Shipping Magnate CHC Macllwraith. The mansion was transformed into a country house hotel in 1977. Andrew and Christina Brownsword became its ´custodians´ in 2005 and in 2006 Gidleigh Park underwent a substantial transformation. Set on the banks of the North Teign River and in the heart of Devon´s Dartmoor National Park.

There are 24 individually styled rooms furnished with antiques and fine English fabrics. Each room is unique with beautiful views over the forest, moorlands or river. Combining history with the most modern comforts, including huge comfortable beds, stunning marble-clad bathrooms and imaginative wet rooms, and the most modern technologies, including WiFi and HD flat screen televisions. Toiletries are by L’Occtaine, fresh flowers, bowls of fruit, and a decanter of port welcome all their visitors.

Private lunch parties with up to 52 guests are managed with the overall feel of being in your own private Devonshire home.

Before his employment at Gidleigh Park country house hotel, Michael Caines MBE had worked with renowned chefs Raymond Blanc (Le Manoir au Quat’Saisons) and legendary chefs Bernard Loiseau and Joël Robuchon. Caines became the youngest ever winner of 2 Michelin stars at Gidleigh Park in 1999 (held ever since). The Restaurant offers an à la carte menu, as well as a Tasting Menu (changes weekly) and a Classic Tasting Menu (seasonal). The wine list is considered one of the finest and most extensive never mind in Devon but the country.

Furthermore, they are able to offer a full range of spa and beauty treatments in the privacy of all the rooms. These treatments are by appointment and can be pre-booked through the hotel from the team of local beauty therapists who are on call. Treatments include facials; anti-ageing treatments; body wraps and treatments; Swedish, sport and aromatherapy massage; pedicure, manicure and nail enhancements; reiki; reflexology; spinal touch, and much more.

Within the grounds of Gidleigh Park country house hotel itself, there are numerous activities, walks and leisure facilities, while in the vicinity there is a range of activities available. There are numerous paths through the ancient coppiced woodland of ash, birch, oak and beech. There are self-guided boundary walks (maps provided) as well as guided walks by arrangement. The grounds of Gidleigh Park are a great area for dog walking, too. For more strenuous walks, the high moorland beckons.
