Showcasing the very best of national and international contemporary art – including that produced in the region – the refurbished Newlyn Art Gallery and major new art space The Exchange, Penzance, have breathed new life into Cornwall’s art scene since opening in July 2007.
111 years old & still going strong, Newlyn Art Gallery now boasts two exhibition spaces, a studio space with stunning views out to sea, a resource area and bookshop. The Exchange – the largest exhibition space within180 miles - is enabling audiences to see projects on a scale new to the region. An impressive café and gift shop is also on site.
Highlights for the spring/summer season include Swedish artist Peter Geschwind’s labyrinth kinetic installation Automatic and the NSA’s The Drawing Show at The Exchange. At Newlyn Curious Nature presents work by artists who look at the natural world from an usual perspective, taking in drawings, paintings, photographs and sculpture, while Bedwyr Williams will combine photography, performance, drawing and text with a sense of humour later in the summer. Alongside the main gallery programme, artists are making use of other areas of the multi-award-winning buildings with projects such as The New Works Programme giving emerging and established regional artists a platform. A varied programme of exhibitions, education and events is programmed throughout the year. FREE ENTRY.
