The Gannel is a tidal river located on the outskirts of Newquay and is home to an abundance of wildlife.
There are several areas of salt marshes on the Gannel and Penpol Creek and thousands of birds have been recorded sheltering from the harsh northern winters including; dunlin, ringed plover, redshank, whimbrel, grey plover, greenshank, godwits curlew, widgeon and teal.

There a two circular walks that can be taken on the Gannel and one of the nicest is a stroll round to Crantock where you can indulge in a delicious cream tea – after all you’ve earnt it ! For horse riders there are rides daily from Trenance Stables that use the bridle ways and take in parts of the foreshore.
The Gannel joins the sea on Crantock beach and here you will find many rockpools and small caves to explore. From the beach you can look over the river and up to the houses situated above, each one having a fantastic view.
