Mullion is the largest village on the Lizard Peninsula and has shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants; it is also home of Trenance Chocolate. Driving through the village on your way to Mullion Cove you will notice the picturesque cottages and little alleyways through the village.
The National Trust acquired Mullion Cove in 1945 and today there is still an amount of fishing going on, mainly for crabs, lobsters and crawfish for the local restaurants. This is a popular holiday destination with plenty of accommodation from hotels to self-catering cottages and a nearby golf course.
Mullion cove is still a small working harbour and was built in 1895 when pilchard fishing was the main local industry. The old pilchard cellar and net store can still be seen-another unofficial industry was rife here too – smuggling! Two popular beaches very nearby are Poldhu Cove and Pollurian Cove, Poldhu being the place where Marcaroni conducted his famous experiments in trans-Atlantic radio communications.
There are mining remains inland of Mullion, at Wheal Unity copper mine, which produced copper from the early 18th century to 1919 when it closed. A copper boulder from the mine can be seen in the Natural History Museum, London. As with the rest of Cornwall, there is no longer any mining in the area.
