Burgh Island has a wonderful art deco hotel which was used as the setting of two Agatha Christie novels. Agatha Christie lived in the South Hams just outside Dartmouth - Bigbury on Sea is one of South Devon best coastal locations for spectacular coastal walks, windsurfing, canoeing and with a good golf course nearby.
Bigbury on Sea is surrounded by magnificent sandy, safe beaches that are patrolled by RNLI lifeguards throughout the summer, making them well suited for family bathing. At high tide the sea joins up around the famous Burgh Island and a sea tractor is used as a ferry backwards and forwards.

Other nearby beaches includes Sedgewell Sands - popular for famililes with plenty of space at low tide. These sands run along the river bank of the picturesque Avon Estuary. Bantham Beach on the other side of the estuary is a large well favoured sandy beach with both sand dunes and rock pools. Ayrmer Cove, which is a small beach for when a quieter location is desired, is great for rock pooling too and in times gone by was used by smugglers....
