Hotel Endsleigh is a fine country house hotel in Devon situated on the edge of Dartmoor, one of the greatest, unspoilt natural areas left in England, perfect for walking, riding and fishing. The Bedford family owned a third of Devon and decided this was the prettiest place in the county to build their country house. Endsleigh was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyattville as a cottage orné. The family used it as a shooting and fishing lodge; they opened it just once a year when they arrived with servants, children, silver and animals in tow. Georgina was a passionate gardener and lover of the outdoors and Humphry Repton created an outstanding Devonshire garden for her. Both the country house and the garden are Grade I listed. There are 108 acres of woodland and garden to explore, along with a stretch of the Tamar River. The Country House Hotel is a member of the Endsleigh Fishing Club and owns seven rods, so guests can fish along eight miles of the best salmon and sea trout river in England. The fishing club ghillie is there to help guests.
Endsleigh´s interior, designed by Olga Polizzi features an unpretentious mix of simple textures, linen, contemporary art and period Regency panelling. The 16 comfortable hotel rooms have antique furniture, bathrooms with many original features and fine linens. This country house hotel has been carefully restored in the spirit of the Regency period. Experience a three course lunch or dinner overlooking the immaculate views of the garden and open countryside to Dartmoor beyond. Meals are served in the original dining room decorated with the crests of the Bedfords´ family and friends. Non-residents are extremely welcome for lunch, afternoon teas and dinner, please contact the hotel for details.
Tavistock, a lovely small market town in Devon, is but five minutes away. The covered Pannier Market was built by the Bedford family in local stone and should be seen; it brings together small shops and stalls and a justly famous cheese shop. Hotel Endsleigh is close to several beautiful National Trust and English Heritage properties and gardens. If you just want to unwind and relax, read a book from our library in front of our many open fires with a cream tea, or glass of champagne. The charming Tamar Valley railway runs from nearby Gunnislake to Plymouth, where you can see the historic naval dockyards or take to the sea. There is also a pleasure boat that runs between Calstock and Plymouth at certain times of the year. Exeter Cathedral further East across Devon is a little further away but well worth a visit.
