Yearlstone Vineyard can be found on the slopes of the lower valley of the River Exe in the picturesque village of Bickleigh in the heart of Devon.
The vineyard was started in 1976 and Roger and Julia White, the current owners bought it in 1994 and have transformed the site. Having built their own house, they then went on to build the Vineyard shop, office, winery and most recently, a beautiful café with outdoor terrace which gives the most beautiful views over the Exe valley.
Yearlstone vineyard itself has grown from 1.5 acres to its current 7.5 and now includes an apple orchard from where their cider is made. The vineyard is 200 feet above sea level and has natural protection from the west, north and east. The soil is a silty clay loam over fragmented Devon red sandstone with excellent drainage and is perfect for vines - red soils are the most sought after for vineyards all around the world. In all, Yearlstone´s position is perfect for growing vines and ripening grapes.
Yearlstones wines are numbered and include white, red and their sparkling, Yearlstone Vintage Brut, many of them are award winning, their Yearlstone No 3, a delicate dry Rose, won Silver in English wine of the Year 2008.
The whole process and vines can be seen when visiting either on a self-guide tour or by joining one of their special group tours. Enjoy a light lunch in their Terrace Café and if you sit outside the view over the Exe Valley and the river below are stunning. Details of local food producers who come highly recommended or are used in the café are found on their web site, along with their opening times and forthcoming special events.
